Days One & Two: What is a system?
Day Three: Seriously, what is a system? (Same topic ;))
Days Four & Five: What is interdependence?

HOMEWORK: Shifts in Systems Graphic Organizer
Day Six: What is systems thinking? How can it be beneficial?
Day Seven: What are the attributes of a systems thinker?
- Today we brainstormed a list of characteristics to describe a systems thinker.
- Notice that you guys associated all of the IB Learner Profile traits with a systems thinker? That's awesome!
- We used our "Thinker" trait to evaluate our needs/wants as human beings in 2015.
- We then analyzed different problems that can be an outcome of fulfilling our needs & wants.
- Lastly, we independently generated lists of the problems that currently exist in our world today.
Days 8 & 9: What is the Criterion A: Inquiring & Analyzing - Task #1?
- Today I introduced the "Mission" of the Shark Tank Project and Part One of the Criterion A Task.
- You were given several important documents for the project, which include:
- the Criterion A: Inquiring & Analyzing - Task #1 & Rubric
- the Research Graphic Organizers
- the "How-To Evaluate Your Sources" sheet
- the Selection, Explanation and Justification of Need Graphic Organizer
You will need to complete all parts of this task, staple your papers together, and turn them in by Wed. Mar. 4!
Here are links to extra copies of the paperwork in case you lose anything:
If you received your Task A - Part 1 back and you did not earn an 'Advanced', please fix up your work using the descriptive feedback and resubmit! The example I shared in class (Ryan's on 'Wasted Water' is below for you to see as an example).

Days 10 & 11: What is the Project Journal & Criterion A: Inquiring & Analyzing - Task #2:
- Today I began by introducing an important part of this project that will start now and end when the entire project is complete. It is called the Project Journal.
- You must make a copy of the Google Doc clicking on the link below and following these directions:
1) Open the document.
2) Click on "File" and "Make a copy".
3) Enter a new document name: A2 - Project Journal - LAST NAME, FIRST NAME.
4) Click "Okay".
5) Click "Share" and share back with me: [email protected]
- Today I also introduced Part Two of the Criterion A task. It is time for you to research already existing solutions for the problem you have self-selected.
- You were given several very important documents for the project, which include:
- the Existing Solutions Graphic Organizer
- the Evaluating ONE Existing Solution Graphic Organizer

Here's the example below that we did today in class after watching the "BoxOutBullying" presentation in the auditorium. That was a great example of an existing solution to the problem of bullying that we could evaluate!
Below you see numerous effective and ineffective components have been listed. The reasoning has been highlighted in yellow. This shows "WHY" each of those components are effective or ineffective in our opinion.

- make the effective components even more effective
- eliminate or improve the ineffective components
Days 12, 13, & 14: What are MYP Global Contexts? How can I select one as a lens to solve through and what should my success criteria be? What is Criterion B - Developing Ideas - Part 1? How can we share in the decision-making process?
Today we moved forward in the project to a really important phase. We're starting to become the problem-solvers. The day involved:
1) Design a partial solution to your self-selected problem
2) Design an informative & persuasive website
- five minutes of project journal writing at the beginning of class
- introduction of the MYP Global Contexts - because systems are so HUGE and because our problems we've identified can be OVERWHELMING, looking through one of these can be a way to narrow our focus
- analysis of three video clips featuring different innovative solutions & evaluation of which global context is the "best fit"
- recapping what you've all accomplished (picked a problem, researched it and existing solutions, learned about Global Contexts)
- introduction of the official DESIGN BRIEF - the gist is you've all been hired to design two things for your clients (i.e. your peers and a variety of adults from the Milwaukee area) - click on link to see handout!
1) Design a partial solution to your self-selected problem
2) Design an informative & persuasive website
- introduction of the Criterion B: Developing Ideas - Part One Task - click on the link to see handout and graphic organizers
- work time to ask questions, begin creating your own design specifications establishing two different sets of success criteria and doing a bit of self-conducted research on web design.
As a reminder: There are technically SIX Global Contexts in the MYP program.
We are using only three because they best connect to the Shark Tank project.
The other three are: Identities & Relationships, Personal & Cultural Expression and Orientation of Space & Time.

Day 15: What is Criterion B: Developing Ideas - Part 2? What feasible designs can I generate as possible partial solutions?
Days 16, 17, & 18: How can I use a "comparative solutions matrix" and a "cost-benefit analysis" to help me evaluate my ideas for solutions?
Today we continued to work on Criterion B: Developing Ideas - Task 2. Your "Feasible Designs" graphic organizer was due at the beginning of class.
Now that you have several feasible ideas for (partial) solutions to your problem. You're going to evaluate each one of those possibilities to see which one is the best one to create.
Steps to evaluate:
Now that you have several feasible ideas for (partial) solutions to your problem. You're going to evaluate each one of those possibilities to see which one is the best one to create.
Steps to evaluate:
- You must first open the "Evaluating My Solutions" graphic organizer below.
- Go to 'File' and 'Make a copy' so you can edit it!
- Copy and paste the entire document into your Project Journal under today's entry.
- Complete both the comparative solutions matrix and the cost-benefit analysis (like we did as a large group with an example in class).
- Use the example provided below if you get stuck and/or ask your teacher/peers for help.
Day 19: What makes for good website design?
Today we created a list of characteristics of good web design. Some of those characteristics were:
We also evaluated several real websites and rated them on a scale of 1 (super awful) to 10 (super fantastic) for the following criteria:
- easy on the eyes - colors that are complimentary
- well-organized and easy to navigate
- inclusion of media and photos
- color-blind friendly
- bilingual if possible
- easy to find the information
- not too much text in any one place - splitting up the text to be easier to read
- a catchy name or title
We also evaluated several real websites and rated them on a scale of 1 (super awful) to 10 (super fantastic) for the following criteria:
The last question, "Will you do it?" is perhaps one of the most important ones!
Remember that the purpose of your website is to make them aware of the problem, to show them why it's important to care, and to get them to be part of a reasonable solution.
You want people to feel compelled to act.
Action and service are KEY to a better world and human experience!

Days 21 and 22: WORK DAYS to create solutions & websites
If you want to "spread awareness" as your partial solution, or if you said "making a website" is your partial solution, please understand you must create a product in addition to your website.
Some examples of products that spread awareness include:
**All of these things are "shareable" and you can ask your clients to take action to continue the spread of awareness through any/all social media forums.
Whatever product you create should be part of your website, for it tells us what we can reasonably do and how we can take action!

Days 23 & 24: Work Days Continued...
Reminder: Your "rough drafts" of your partial solutions and your websites are due at the beginning of class next Monday. You have one week to get where you need to be.
I shared the following example from the weekend of a partial solution to address the global problem of poverty:
